Day 29/135
Athletic Accomplishments
Midge Purce, 25, has already solidified herself as one of the most exciting up-and-coming players in soccer. She started racking up accolades and garnered national attention in high school, as an NSCAA All-American in 2010 and 2011 and Maryland’s Gatorade Player of the Year in 2012.
At Harvard, Purce scored 42 goals in 69 appearances and won Ivy League Player of the Year in 2015 and 2016, and was named first-team NSCAA All-American in 2016 before heading to the NWSL, where she has played for the Boston Breakers, Portland Thorns, and Sky Blue FC.
She got her call-up to the USWNT in 2017, but after a few inopportune injuries, she didn’t get her first cap until 2019. Purce has since transitioned from a forward—which she still plays for Sky Blue—to playing defense for the USWNT, where she’s now viewed as one of the more exciting rising stars for the team.
Character Archetype: The Creator
Midge Purce has a promising career ahead of her. And not just on the soccer field, where she has played both forward for 3 different NWSL club teams and defender for the USWNT.
At just 25 years old, Purce already serves as executive director of Black Women’s Player Collective, which fights racism and sexism in all sports. And you may recognize her from a recent visit to the White House alongside Megan Rapinoe, to fight for pay equity for women on Equal Pay Day.
Purce said, ”You would never expect a flower to bloom without water. But women in sport who have been denied water, sunlight and soil are somehow expected to blossom. Invest in women, then let’s talk again when you see the return.""
She’s already a leading voice in the fight for better access, opportunity, and pay equity for women and Black athletes. Already a dominating player and a leader who is unafraid to use her voice. Purce wants to make a difference and level the playing field so that those who come up behind her can focus on the game.
