Athletic Accomplishments

Renee Montgomery is a phenomenal point guard, whose leadership and winning extends far beyond the basketball court.

In high school, Montgomery was not only a four-year varsity letter winner, but a four-year captain of her basketball team. As a 14 year-old freshman, she showed that much promise and leadership, leading her West Virginia high school to the state championships three times. A multi-sport athlete, Montgomery also played varsity soccer.

In college, Montgomery went to a little school called UConn, you may have heard of it, where she was the 2006 Big East Freshman of the Year. She was First Team All-Big East multiple times, and finished her career setting the record for number of games played (150). She also finished Top Ten in multiple categories, including points, assists, field goals, 3-point field goals, free throws, and steals.

In her senior season, Montgomery led the Huskies to a perfect 39-0 season, winning an NCAA Championship. She was the winner of the 2009 Honda Sports Award, as the best player in college basketball that season.

Montgomery enjoyed an 11 year career in the WNBA before retiring in 2020. She was the No. 4 overall pick in the 2009 WNBA Draft, a 2011 All-Star, and the 2012 Sixth Woman of the Year.

With the Lynx, Montgomery also won two WNBA titles, in 2015 and 2017.

You want to talk about winning?

Let's start with Renee Montgomery's 39-0 senior season and winning an NCAA title with UConn. Being drafted 4th overall into the WNBA. Winning two WNBA titles with the Minnesota Lynx. Pretty good record so far.

Then, let's talk about Montgomery's selflessness and leadership, opting out the 2020 WNBA "Wubble" season to address systemic racism in the wake of police killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. To forego a paycheck and the chance to play the game she loves because of something bigger than herself.

But check the scoreboard, because Montgomery KEEPS winning. Instead of playing for the Atlanta Dream, she worked to register voters throughout the state of Georgia. She campaigned tirelessly for Rev. Raphael Warnock to unseat Kelly Loeffler, who was both a Georgia Senator AND part-owner of the Dream.

In the special election, Warnock won Loeffler's seat. And you know who else won Loeffler's seat? Renee Montgomery, who is now part-owner of the Atlanta Dream, the team she played for just last year.

Montgomery is playing chess, winning in 10 dimensions. Because she's not just here to play. She's here for keeps.
