Athletic Accomplishments
It's a funny exercise, writing up the athletic accomplishments of an 18 year-old woman who has missed major parts of two basketball seasons, but here we are. For Azzi Fudd, the high school basketball prodigy, her accomplishments can already fill tomes, and even better, she's just getting going.
Azzi Fudd is already a basketball superstar, and she hasn't even graced your TV screen yet. That changes next year, when she begins phase two of her basketball career at UConn, alongside best friend, and 135 member Paige Bueckers. As a sophomore, Fudd was named the National Gatorade High School Basketball Player of the Year the youngest girl to ever win the award. During that season she led her team to a 35-1 record and the D.C. State Championship.
After that season, things began breaking badly for Fudd, beginning with a torn ACL and MCL while playing in a preliminary World Cup 3-on-3 game. The injury would require a full knee reconstruction, two surgeries that sidelined her for a full year. And by the time Fudd had recovered and was ready to get back on the court, COVID-19 prematurely ended her return season.
Even having lost significant court time to develop her game further, Fudd has won two international competition gold medals, and was the number one recruit nationally, leading her to Connecticut and a long line of basketball royalty.
Character Archetype: The Prodigy
Despite not having played in a college game yet, Azzi Fudd is a bonafide basketball prodigy. Trust us. You better know her name.
She was one of the first girls invited to Steph Curry's SC30 Select Camp, where she won the 3-point shooting contest—beating every boy in the gym, including multiple current NBA players. The championship match-up was against Steph, which she lost, vowing to go back the next year and try again.
Unfortunately, Fudd tore her ACL the following year, requiring two reconstructive surgeries that forced her to miss Curry Camp. But her doctor clearer her for the 3 Point contest, if she walked between shooting spots. Fudd agreed and won the camp title again.
Fudd, finally healthy, is ready to unleash everything she's worked so hard for. Fudd has a great chance to turn UConn back into the perennial champion that they used to be, and continue progressing the women's game."
